Nova Scotia - 2017 Miles For Smiles

This year marked the 22nd year that Dr. Gabus has taken a weeklong bicycle journey for fun, but also to raise funds for a good cause. His “Miles For Smiles” ride during the fall of 2017 once again benefitted the Mid-Peninsula Dental Health Foundation (MPDHF).
For over 45 years, MPDHF has provided low-cost dental care for the working poor, who do not have dental insurance or government assistance. “Last year MPDHF provided more than $25,000 worth of care right here in our area, helping children and adults ‘keep on smiling’,” said Dr. Gabus. “As one of the dentists providing care, this is a cause that makes me smile, too.”

The 2017 ride through Newfoundland, from August 13-19, started at Deer Lake on Newfoundland’s west side. It followed the island’s Viking Trail north to Gros Morne National Park, the first European settlement in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Viking settlement predates Christopher Columbus’s arrival by 500 years. Daily rides ranged from 40 to 100 kilometers a day offering Canadian nature at its best—fjords, mountains, ocean cliffs, moose and other wildlife, with visits to coastal towns of Rocky Harbour, Portland Creek and Plumb Point. During the past nine years, Dr. Gabus has raised more than $104,000 for the MPDHF. 2017's bike ride through Glacier National Park added more than $12,000, boosting total donations through “Miles For Smiles” to more than $116,000—thanks to the generous sponsorships of patients, business associates, and friends.

"People of all ages can feel at ease when visiting Dr. Gabus. Whether it's for a cleaning or filling, I can guarantee you'll be in good hands."
